One of the best preventive measures you can take is to install a reliable anti-virus program and make sure you keep it up to date. A good anti-virus program will automatically scan incoming and outgoing email, monitor your computer as soon as it starts up, automatically download virus definition updates when you have an Internet connection established and scan your computer once a week for infections. There are a variety of free and commercial platforms available for you to install. We do remind you that you get what you pay for, though, so be vigilant. Make sure that your anti-virus software is doing its job. In addition to having up-to-date anti-virus software, there are a few other things you can do to keep free of viruses. Since most viruses are transmitted via email, be very careful in opening attachments. If you are not expecting an attachment, verify with the sender that it is ok to open. Also, scan any file that you download from the Internet, especially if you are using peer-to-peer applications such as Kazaa or Bear Share. |
